To Tempt a Viking by Michelle Willingham

Non vedevo l'ora do poter leggere questo secondo libro della serie Forbidden Vikings di Michelle Willingham e non sono rimasta delusa. Sono i primi libri che leggo di questa autrice e sta già diventando una delle mie preferite del genere historical romance.

La sua premessa in questa serie era stata chiara sin dall'inizio, alla base di questi racconti non c'era la classica storia d'amore di una coppia, ma quello che può accadere a due persone dopo il fallimento di un matrimonio infelice, la scoperta di un nuovo amore con tutto quello che ne consegue.

Il guerriero vichingo Ragnar Olaffson rimane al fianco dl suo migliore amico, anche quando quest'ultimo conquista la donna che lui ha sempre desiderato. Esiste solo un modo tenere a bada il lato più oscuro della sua personalità: combattere senza pietà.

Quando Elena viene fatta prigioniera, il coraggioso Ragnar rischia tutto per poterla salvare. Ora sono dispersi, in compagnia solo uno dell'altra.

All'improvviso ogni desiderio, ogni sguardo, ogni tocco diventa proibito. Elena potrebbe riuscire a tentare un santo... e Ragnar è un peccatore che è un consapevole che non di non riuscire a mantenere a lungo il proprio controllo.

Nel primo libro il marito i Elena, Styr, viene catturato durante un'imboscata e tenuto prigioniero da una donna, Cara, della quale suo malgrado poi si innamora, ma il suo senso dell'onore gli impedisce di tradire la moglie e una volta liberatosi, va alla sua ricerca.

In questo secondo libro viene raccontato in parte quello che accade in quei giorni di prigionia del marito a Elena e poi la storia prende una nuova strada, come era l'intento dell'autrice.

Per capire appieno la storia sarebbe meglio leggere prima To Sin with a Viking.

Questa storia, se possibile, mi è piaciuta ancora di più della precedente. È raccontata con entrambi i punti di vista di Ragnar ed Elena e questo permette di comprendere le lotte interiori, le paure e incertezze di entrambi i protagonisti, legate soprattutto ai sentimenti di amicizia, affetto, lealtà e senso dell'onore che provano, essendo entrambi legati a Styr.

In questi libri non è tutto semplice e chiaro, bianco o nero. Amore, passione e sensi di colpa complicano le cose.

L'autrice ha scritto una bellissima storia, in alcuni momenti molto commovente e, anche se ambientata nel passato, le vicende vissute dai protagonisti le ho trovate molto attuali e approfondite da un punto di vista psicologico.

I problemi e la frustrazione che possono insorgere in una coppia e soprattutto in una donna che desidera la maternità, e non riesce a realizzare questo sogno può  diventare un peso enorme.

Ho amato i due protagonisti, Ragnar, che per quanto innamorato di Elena, non vuole essere un ripiego, attraverso il quale la donna possa riuscire a consolare le sue delusioni, una volta lasciato il marito, ma al tempo stesso è così protettivo e attento nei suoi confronti, che non si può fare a meno di adorarlo.

Elena all'inizio può sembrare debole e incerta, ma ha uno spirito d'acciaio e pian piano impara a conoscere se stessa, cosa vuole dalla sua vita, e a non essere più solo la "moglie di".

 I couldn't wait to read this second book in the Forbidden Vikings series by Michelle Willingham and I'm not a little bit disappointed. These are the first books I read by this author and she is already becoming one of my favorites of the genre historical romance.

Her premise in this series had been clear from the beginning, at the base of these stories there isn't the classic love story of a couple, but what can happen between two people after the failure of an unhappy marriage, the discovery of a new love with everything that goes with it.

Warrior Viking Ragnar Olafsson stood by as his best friend claimed the woman he desired the most. There was only one way to quench the deep darkness within him—become merciless in battle.

When Elena is taken captive, fearless Ragnar risks everything to save her. Now they are stranded with only each other for company. Suddenly every longing, every look, every touch is forbidden. Elena could tempt a saint—and sinner Ragnar knows he won’t be able to hold out for long!

In the first book Elena's husband , Styr, was captured during an ambush and held captive by a woman, Cara, and despite how they met, he falls in love with her, but his sense of honor prevents him from betraying his wife and once freed, he starts his research for Elena.

In this second book is narrated in part what happens to Helena, in those days of Styr's captivity  and then the story takes a new way, as it was the intention of the author.

To fully understand the story it's better to read first To Sin with a Viking.

 I liked even more this story, than the first one. The book is written with both points of view of Ragnar and Elena and this allows to understand the inner struggles, fears and uncertainties of both protagonists, because of their feelings of friendship, affection, loyalty and sense of honor,  due their bond with Styr.

In these books not everything is simple and clear, white or black. Love, passion and guilt complicates things.

The author has written a beautiful story, with some moments very moving and although it's set in the past, I found it very real for our days and in-depth  from a psychological point of view.

The problems and frustration that can arise in a pair,and especially in a woman that want to motherhood and fails to make this dream come true, can be a huge problem.

I loved the two protagonists, Ragnar, who is in love with Elena from always, but doesn't want to be used from Elena only to forget her husband, but at the same time he is so protective and attentive toward her, I can't help but adore him.

Elena at the beginning may seem weak and uncertain, but she has a spirit of steel and she slowly learns to know herself, what she wants from her life, and to be no longer only the "wife of".

Consumato dal desiderio di vendetta... E dal desiderio.

Catturato dal suo nemico e incatenato come un cane, Leif Egilsson ha un solo pensiero nella sua testa: la vendetta. Non è più ammalliato dall'ingannevole bellezza di Lady Astrid e dalla sua apparente innocenza, che lo aveva spinto a desiderarla intensamente.

Dopo la sua fuga l'intenzione di questo orgoglioso e fiero vichingo è di farle agate a caro prezzo il suo tradimento... Nel suo letto. Solo che Astrid possiede il cuore di un guerriero e non si farà domare con la facilità che lui crede.

Che dire di questo libro? Cover, sinossi e titolo sono abbastanza ingannevoli confronto al contenuto del libro. "Defiant" non corrisponde esattamente all'idea che mi sono fatta di Astrid, anzi l'ho trovata fin troppo arrendevole quando il suo tutore e il nemico di Leif l'hanno coinvolta nel tentativo di denigrare il povero vichingo, mi sarei aspettata qualcosa di più da parte sua per aiutare l'uomo a scappare, invece si lascia intimorire e obbedisce come un cagnolino alle richieste degli uomini che hanno reso schiavo l'uomo che l'aveva liberata in precedenza da un sequestro.

Leif da parte sua, una volta tornato in libertà medita  vendetta anche nei confronti di Astrid,  vuole restituirle la pariglia, ma in fondo le sue sono solo minacce, si lascia convincere un po' troppo facilmente della buona fede della donna.

Solo nel finale c'è un pizzico di ribellione da parte di Astrid, prende in mano le redini del suo destino e sfida Leif e meno male direi.

Gli unici personaggi che ho trovato convincenti sono stati i nemici di Leif, veramente dotati di menti perverse e crudeli.

Terzo libro della serie Victorious Vikings, la storia si può leggere da sola, sono presenti come personaggi secondari alcuni dei protagonisti dei libri precedenti con dei riferimenti ai fatti avvenuti in precedenza che hanno scatenato una vera e propria faida nella quale si trovano coinvolti Leif e Astrid.

On his escape, this fierce, proud Viking is bent on making her pay the price of her betrayal—in his bed! Only, Astrid has the heart of a warrior, and she will not be tamed as easily as he believes….

What can I say about this book? The cover, the title and the synopsis are quite misleading compared to the content of the book. "Defiant" does not correspond exactly about what I thought about Astrid, indeed I found her far too yielding when his guardian and Leif's enemy have involved her trying to denigrate the poor Viking, I would have expected something more from her for helping him to escape, instead she cowed and obeys like a lapdog to the demands of the men who enslaved the man who had released her previously by a kidnapping.

Leif on his part, once back in freedom ponders revenge even against Astrid, he wants to made her pay, but basically he made just threats, he trusted a bit too easily in the good faith of the woman.

Only at the end there is a hint of rebellion on the part of Astrid, she takes over the reins of her destiny and she challenges Leif and thank goodness I'd say.

The only characters that I found compelling were the enemies of Leif, really with perverse and cruel minds.

Its the third book in the Victorious Vikings series, the story can be read alone, are present as minor characters some of the protagonists of the previous books with references to events that occurred earlier that have triggered a real feud in which are involved with Leif and Astrid.
