The Closer You Come by Gena Showalter - The Original Heartbreakers #1

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter introduces the Original Heartbreakers, where three not-quite-reformed bad boys are about to meet the women who will bring them to their knees.

Just released from prison, Jase Hollister has a dark and twisted past. And now, he has only one goal: stay out of trouble. Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, sounds like the perfect place for him and his two brothers-by-circumstance to settle down and live a nice, simple life. But model citizen isn’t exactly this rugged bachelor’s default setting—especially when it comes to a certain hot-blooded Southern beauty…

Brook Lynn Dillon has always been responsible. Not that it’s done her much good. The down-on-her-luck waitress is broke, single and fun-deprived. Until Jase comes along. He is dangerous, stunningly protective, breathtakingly sexy and as tempting as sin, and the passion sizzling between them is undeniable. But can it melt her resistance? After all, the right kind of trouble might be just what they both need.

I think with this new series, "The Original Heartbreakers", Gena Showalter wanted a little change, leaving aside the world of paranormal romance, in which she usually likes to set her stories.
"The Closer You Come", first installment in the series, is a contemporary romance that has all the numbers to win new readers, perhaps even among younger people, and certainly Gena's fans will not be disappointed. Ms Showalter hasn't lost her magic touch, giving life to a story and characters that, in my opinion, leave their mark.
I loved the beginning of the book, the encounter/clash between the two protagonists, Jase and Brook Lynn, puts them in an awkward situation and their reactions are unpredictable to say the least.
You can read the point of views of both of them in the story and it makes everything amazing, addictive and it is impossible not to be impressed and fascinated by Jase or not to love Brook Lynn, who is irresistible right away and a lot of fun to read. She is young, but always used to be that reliable and responsible one in the family and she really struggles to keep tabs on her sister who is her exact opposite. Brook Lynn is sensitive but tough and throughout the town is well aware of her temperament. When she's close to lose her temper she starts to count to three, as warning for the people that she's going to unleash  the "beast in her", well ... everyone run like hell and it's too, too funny to see her having this effect on others. Everyone except him, Jase, who has faced in his past so many demons, and isn't a bit intimidated from her.
After a terrible childhood and making a big mistake that has ruined his life, his motto became: Feel Nothing. Want Nothing. Need Nothing..
He builts around himself an armature of apparent coldness and indifference, to try to hold off his worst nightmares and keep away the others and he became very good at it, but Brook Lynn nicks this armor without realizing it and after that, instead, with full knowledge of the facts, she decides to pull out the nails and fight her way to get him, why he's worth fighting.
He is a complex and troubled character, full of secrets and dark sides, but I have a real soft spot for this kind of male protagonists.
Actually, I love him, but also his two friends, Wess and Beck, and the bond they share. Having lived a difficult childhood joined them, they become for each other the family they never had, and nothing seems to be able to divide them. Their relationship is unique, special and solid. Brook Lynn manages to sneak into their lives and earn little by little her space, creating a truly entertaining interludes in their company and transmitting that warmth missing in their home.
It was very particular the author's choice to pick us for protagonist a young girl with a disability that creates problems, and not the classic beautiful and perfect one, a problem that doesn't make it any less burning the passion between Brook Lynn and Jase.
The attraction and tension that lingers between the two is so palpable that it is difficult to  not being trapped in it and when I arrived to their first kiss ... let's say I could breathe again, and what a kiss ... Yes, it was worth waiting a little.
Well done Gena! It was so good! I was a bit hesitant before starting  to read the book, but now I have high expectations for this series, because the stories of Wess and Beck are very promising. Their "curriculum" in one-night stand could embarrass Casanova and for taming two subjects such them, the female protagonists of the books will certainly be extraordinary.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin for the book.

Rock Hard by Nalini Singh

"Rock Hard" is a little different from the two previous books, in the new contemporary romance series "Rock Kiss".
Neither of the two main characters is a member of the rock band, but Charlotte is Molly's best friend that we met in "Rock Addiction", first book of the series. Her presence in that book, though short, had left its mark and I was hoping so much that it was given a bit of space, to Charlie and her T-Rex, or Gabriel her despot boss. From there the nickname Charlie kindly give it to him when she speaks of the man with Molly.
T-Rex is really ok for him as nickname and I am in love with this couple and their history.
Charlotte is a girl who does everything to blend into the environment, rather than give into the eye and she doesn’t want to attract the attention of others, especially of men, I think she would arrive at the point of dressing up with the wallpaper if it were possible. It’s not just plain shyness, but the result of a bad experience in the past that has left indelible marks in her life. She has to come to terms with her fears and her panic attacks, by approaching them boldly from day to day, to try to live a life as normal as possible, but Gabriel has no intention to let her hide like a scared mouse. He saw the glimpses of a different woman behind the facade that Charlotte shows to everyone, and he is intrigued and decided to come into the open, because he wants that woman at his side, although his instinct makes him understand immediately that the source of the girl's behavior is due not only to her character, but is tied to something bad that happened in the past.
It was the perseverance and stubbornness of Gabriel that conquered me, the great attention he shows to Charlotte, the way he teases her, how he puts her under pressure to pull out her claws at him, and show that underneath the surface there is a determined and intelligent woman, a survivor who can handle a bad-tempered and dominant T-Rex, putting him back in his place.
Charlie is adorable, and despite all her problems is really tough, a person who has been the rock that helped Molly to endure her terrible and painful adolescence. Charlotte is a true fighter, willing to expose herself to defend those she loves.
Gabriel is the only one that manages to make lose her control, her apparent calm, a weapon that she has always helped to face her fears and manage them. She can’t think too much and to filter her reactions and emotions with Gabriel and she reacts impulsively.
I enjoyed a lot reading their verbal clashes and another thing that I liked a lot in Gabriel is that he doesn’t shelter Charlotte under a bell jar, for fear of scare her because of his "physicality" and the attraction he feels for her, and certainly a former rugby player in the "physicality" thing does not fail. He’s willing to give her all the time she needs, but he is deeply convinced that she can handle herself and the strong physical attraction they feel for each other and then, however, and he teases her in all the way. This is important for Charlotte: being treated like a woman, to feel emotions so strong and intense that push her to face her fears.
In their story it isn’t all roses and flowers, sometimes they make one step forward and two back, but it's a wonderful love story, so beautiful, as she only Nalini Singh knows how to write, creating characters so wonderful.
The parts of the book that I preferred were those in which Gabriel and Charlotte joined his family playing rugby "in the family", these are scenes full of magic, where the author gives her best, funny moments, sometimes full of tenderness and while I was reading it I felt a great desire of belonging.
Needless to say that T-Rex is my "new book-boyfriend"!

Hot Secrets by Lisa Renee Jones

The Walker Brothers... Tall, dark, and deadly, these three brothers run Walker security. Each brother is unique in his methods and skills, but all share key similarities. They are passionate about those they love, relentless when fighting for a cause they believe in, and all believe that no case is too hard, no danger too dark. Dedication is what they deliver, results are their reward.

HOT SECRETS: (Book 1) Royce Walker, a former FBI Agent, who's opened a private security firm with his brothers, has always had the hots for the prim, proper Assistant District Attorney, but considered her hand's off because of a family connection. However, when danger threatens Lauren, he isn't willing to stand by and watch her get hurt. Now the passion for survival is only rivaled by the passion burning between them. And that passion, might just be the death of them both.

Let's talk about these Walker brothers. Certainly they deserve it after reading Hot Secrets, the first book in Tall Dark & Deadly  series by Lisa Renee Jones.
The book is quite nice to read, a contemporary romance, whose plot also intertwine elements of suspense and mistery.
Lauren is a lawyer, she puts passion and sense of Justice working for her profession as district attorney, despite having a very influential father that would love to have her by his side in his law firm. Lauren's cases are complex and often attract the attention of mass-media about murders and death penalty. But there are not just newspapers and television interested in the woman, she receives strange phone calls for some time, and alarming invasions of her privacy and home that turn into veiled threats.
Royce Walker has always been attracted to the woman, but working together with his brothers of an agency that deals with security, in this case his interest is not just personal.
There aren't men with exceptional powers or supernatural creatures, but the  Walker brothers Walker are no less dangerous and lethal if you cross their paths. They're charming, hot and dominant.
Hot Secrets is really well written, I read it in a very short time and Lauren and Royce are two good characters, and the chemistry between them exceptional.
Thanks for the book Netgalley.

RATING: 3.5 stars

Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh

A bad boy wrapped in a sexy, muscled, grown-up package might be worth a little risk…

Molly Webster has always followed the rules. After an ugly scandal tore apart her childhood and made her the focus of the media’s harsh spotlight, she vowed to live an ordinary life. No fame. No impropriety. No pain. Then she meets Zachary Fox, a tattooed bad boy rocker with a voice like whiskey and sin, and a touch that could become an addiction.

A one-night stand with the hottest rock star on the planet, that’s all it was meant to be…

Fox promises scorching heat and dangerous pleasure, coaxing Molly to extend their one-night stand into a one-month fling. After that, he’ll be gone forever, his life never again intersecting with her own. Sex and sin and sensual indulgence, all with an expiration date. No ties, no regrets. Too late, Molly realizes it isn’t only her body that’s become addicted to Fox, but her heart…

Nalini Singh is one of my favorite authors, as evidenced by the presence of her books put in plain evidence in my library.
I must spread a blanket pitifully on editorial choices of publishers in our country which obviously have big problems in knowing how to select the authors to publish, especially when it comes to a series of books.
With Rock Addiction, Ms Singh  goes back to write  a contemporary romance, after the huge success of international sales of her books paranormal romance of Guild Hunter series and Psy-Changeling. I say go back to contemporary romance, because in reality she started her adventure as a writer with this genre.
Rock Addiction, first book in the Rock Kiss series, amazed me somewhat for its strong erotic component, I didn't expect it, I was surprised, but certainly I'm not complaining, Nalini Singh can be very addictive, always and everywhere.
I appreciated the story written by the author, although the context chosen by her, she's outside of the usual cliche: he is Fox, the male protagonist, a rock star who could have any woman at his feet, to have undergone has very clear ideas about who wants by his side and know what needs to be done to get the attention of the only woman he desires.
He doesn't want to scare her knowing now how serious are his intentions,  it might make her escape, and he knows to have some cards in his favor to play: he is irresistible, hot, a little bit forbidden charm, everything that Molly has always tried to avoid. Fox offers a short relationship, a month during which they can explore the attraction they are feeling, time to convince her that he's the right man for her, he wants to make lose her head, and then earn her trust and love and break down all the barriers that Molly has been able to build around herself over time for fear of suffering.
I really liked Fox, it is needless to say, so dama hot, but also a loyal man, brutally honest, stubborn and very protective, a mix that is lethal for me. A character to be discovered, by reading his story and going beyond the surface of things.
Molly does not convinced me much like female protagonist, I'm nit very fond with her... maybe a little too timid for my taste, obsessed with fear of follow father's footsteps, but basically her fear of mass media and their attention towards her and Fox as a couple is more than justifiable given the unfriendly treatment that newspapers had with her when she was a young girl. I liked  a lot her ability to get the tune right away with the Fox group, to transmit her warmth and disinterested affection to them, a breath of oxygen for the boys.
Inthe story of this author people around the protagonists always have important and fundamental role in their lives.
I adored the rest of the band, the deep bond that unites them, that fame and money have not scratched, they grew up together, they overcome all adversities, always together, despite their deep differences. They understand Rachele other without words, they protect each other, a real family and Molly became because of Fox. David, Abe and Noah intrigue me a lot, maybe because Ms Singh's characters  always have some dark sides, troubled and mysterious.
Definitely a promising series to follow in the future, I expect great things.
Thanks to Netgalley for the book.

To Defy a Sheikh by Maisey Yates

The cost of defiance.

Princess Samarah Al-Azem knows you cannot rush revenge. Having bided her time, she's finally ready to bring down Ferran, her kingdom's enemy and the man who took everything from her. In the still of night, she lies in wait in his bedchamber….
It isn't the first time Sheikh Ferran has found himself at the edge of an assassin's blade…but never has it been wielded by such a beautiful assailant. Soon he has her at his mercy—something he's wanted for years!
Now Samarah must decide: imprisonment in a cell…or in diamond shackles as his wife.

This is the best book I've read written by  Ms Maisey Yates, in her stories set in the fascinating world of the sheikhs.
Certainly the one with the most interesting and compelling characters.
Ferran is one of those characters who affect with their charms: beautiful but deadly like a wild and untamed creature, confident and dominant, loyal and courageous.
And then there is Samarah ... a woman who I found amazing, she survived through a terrible childhood: a fairy-tale Princess, who has found herself to live on the streets, in the midst of perils of all sorts and has managed to survive all this thanks her new purpose: revenge against Ferran, the man who deprived her of everything.
She became the perfect killer, invisible to everyone and ready to hit the enemy.
Clever, cunning and beautiful. But strong enough to be able to go further and do not become a slave of the hatred and of the past, and she can see the reality with all its facets and then she decide to move on.
A beautiful book, in which I was involved and passionate during its reading.

Beyond the Velvet Rope by Tiffany Ashley

Welcome to Club Babylon: where the A-list VIPs come to play

Scoring a gig at Miami’s Club Babylon is a fantasy come true for New York promoter Thandie Shaw. The hottest club on the strip is a magnet for major South Beach movers and shakers. And Thandie’s about to meet the biggest player of them all.
Babylon owner Elliot Richards is macho, arrogant, sexist—everything Thandie doesn’t want in a boss or lover. Elliot is also the most erotic man who’s ever wanted to take her to bed. But Thandie’s no fool. Even as he tries to seduce her into a world of intense and shocking passion, she knows it’s too good to last…especially after she uncovers Elliot’s explosive secrets.
Thandie’s going down a dangerous road, and she’s risking a lot more than her career. Torn between doubt and desire, will she have to pay the ultimate price?
Darkly sensual and deeply moving, Beyond the Velvet Rope takes you into a world of uncontrollable desire and unexpected consequences.

I have to confess that my mind is a littore twisted, just seeing the word "rope" in the title and I immediately thought it was a book of erotic BDSM, I was wrong.
Not that the book is lacking of eroticism and sex scenes with  contents very hot and for adults.
Beyond the Velvet Rope speaks of a world of elite, the Miami that often appears in the TV series, VIP parties, a city full of beautiful half-naked bodies of women covered by a few inches of fabric, limousine, money, champagne and exclusive clubs that have people that counts.
It would be a lie to say that this city full of excess is not attractive in my eyes.
The male protagonist Elliott is one of the most arrogant and sexist men that I have ever read, often irritating to self-confidence and his being so dominant. In the reality probably if I met this kind of type of man I'll shoot him on sight, but in the books are my favorite characters.
Thandie the female protagonist, despite being a career woman, aware of her beauty and accustomed to using it in her work, cunning and smart in handling Vip and unwanted avanches, but eventually she can't resist Elliott.
Their passion is burning and intense, but their personalities are always in continual conflict, making their story very compelling, as well as plot twists that are discovered
Thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin for the book.

TITLE: Beyond the Velvet Rope
AUTHOR: Tiffany Ashley

How to Reprimand Your Rock Star by Mina Vaughn

How to Discipline Your Vampire.
Keaton è molto divertente e molto sexy,  veramente imprevedibile, sensuale e irriverente e adorabile.

In this fun and saucy romance novel, all-star college basketball player Thea dominates on the courts—and off—with a rock star who is determined to win her over.
Thea is a star basketball player at UConn on track to be Rookie of the Year. That is, if she can stay focused on the game. Lately that hasn’t been going so well, as her knee has been bothering her. But that’s not the only thing on her mind…
Ever since rock star Keaton Lowe surprised her in the girl’s locker room, Thea can’t stop thinking about him. On top of his status and enticing ways, he seems to know everything about her. But some of his actions cross the line, and Keaton needs to be punished. Will Thea keep her head in the game, or get distracted by her other favorite pastime—reprimanding her rock star?

This is the second book I read by Mina Vaughn. The first was amazing and very, very funny, in this case I was expecting maybe a little too much and so despite being a cute and enjoyable read, I must say that it does not seem to me on the dame level as How to Discipline Your Vampire.
I liked the setting in real basketball women's College Sports,  the basket is a sport that I love and I follow, and then I found myself taken from Thea's sporting events.
The BDSM contents in this book are different from the usual, lighter, with a young girl who discovers in herself the desire to dominate a guy who has more experience than her wheel in this field, and it's definitely a challenge not simple to deal with, but she is committed to the most determined to discover this new side of herself and try it with Keaton. It isn't the usual relationship between a strong Domme and her submissive.
Keataon is really fun e very hot, he's unpredictable, sensual and irreverent and adorable.
Their story a real itinerant adventure, because of Championship's matches and the shows of him. They must do somersaults to behold and live their story, but this is one of the things that is fascinating in this book.
Nice to read, written in the usual vein of irony that distinguishes this writer's books, a romance definitely different from usual.

Waking Up Pregnant by Mira Lynn Kelly

The night that changed everything!
Waitress Darcy Penn is the smart, sensible type—flirting with the extremely cute guy in the bar just isn't her usual style. As for ending up in his hotel room? Definitely not! Sneaking out while he's in the bathroom to avoid the post-sex awkwardness? Much more like it….
If Darcy had stuck around, Jeff Norton could have told her about their "epic latex fail." So he shouldn't be quite so shocked when months later, Darcy turns up at his classy L.A. office and throws up in his wastepaper basket. She's got a bad case of morning sickness, and she's here to find out what he's going to do about it!

This is a kind of reading that I have begun to follow during and after my pregnancy, due a little of curiousity and solidarity with these protagonists with smooth lines and the hormonal up and down.
It is a contemporary romance in which, as the title says Waking Up Pregnant, the female protagonist gets pregnant.
For once in her life Darcy wants to prove to let go on an adventure of a night with a customer known in the bar where she was working. He is handsome, charming, ironic and seems like a good person. She is going to leave town and start a new life and she decided for once to live an evening during which she is willing to break all the rules that she has set in her life to be safe.
Together she and Jeff spend an amazing night, there is feeling between them, a strong attraction and the whole night is perfect, except for one small detail: the condom used by Jeff was failed and he can't even tell Darcy because she is already  run away, not knowing how to deal with "the after".
The girl becomes pregnant and she goes to Jeff to warn him and give him a chance to make a choice: he wants to be part of the future of the child or not?
Darcy does not want to marry him or something else, she struggled to learn to be a totally independent and she wants to remain herself.
It's a book vero nice, the story is smooth, I enjoyed its reading, and Jeff is truly a fantastic character.
He offers immediatly his support to Darcy, unconditionally, and he wants to be there for her and the baby as she reveals the surprise.
The relationship between the two had stopped so abruptly. But Jeff had not forgotten their adventure, he even though about ask her to continue seeing each other. Both of them say they do not believe in fairy tales, afraid of ruining their relationship, complicating their lives and  the child's one. But Darcy for Jeff is like a siren, he can't resist her and ne can't stay away. And their story continues.
I like this book because it deals with a subject that is sometimes a bit taboo, sex during pregnancy of a woman, and the fact that you can be beautiful and desirable too.
No twist to distort Jeff and Darcy's story, but sometimes it's nice to read stories like this, we leave the mess to the reality outside the books.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin for the book.

The Billionaire Biker by Jackie Ashenden

Terzo libro sui fratelli Morrow e la serie The Billionaire's Club.

Wild and reckless, and more at ease with his biker gang than his business partners, Sean Morrow has always longed for Abigail Prescott, whose life he ruined when an innocent friendship turned into a night of red-hot passion back when they were in high school. Now that his brother, Jax, has decided to hire Abby to work for the Morrows, Sean can no longer ignore his old demons—or his desire. It took Abby time to get over Sean Morrow…and then he walked back into her life. And even though she can’t forget the pain, she can’t stop fantasizing about their one erotic encounter…and she still craves his touch. What she feels for Sean is deeper than need. It’s pure, blind lust—and the feeling is mutual…

Third book about the Morrow brothers and The Billionaire's Club.
This time the protagonist is Sean the "younger brother" escaped in the past from everything and everyone, to join a gang of bikers.
No that he hadn't his good reasons to escape from the Morrow family, for whom he was just an awkward illegitimate son and not desired by his natural father and his stepmother. His half-brothers were too taken by their personal problems with the same family to make him feel accepted and the only person with whom Sean had established a good relationship of affection and friendship was Abby, a young girl from a family equally problematic.
Their relationship could become something more after a night of passion between the two of them, but Sean, was only eighteen, he had too many inner demons to be able to handle these new feelings that begins to feel for Abby and he run away, leaving the city without a word.
After five years the brothers manage to arrange a meeting with him, hoping to persuade him to return and take his place among them. To make sure to catch his attention they bring Abby with them, because  there are things that have happened in Sean's past without his knowledge.
A beautiful story, exciting, although with a simple plot. Abby and Sean impressed me a lot with their story, it would have been simple to write a story less interesting about their new encounter , a second chance for Sean or maybe for both of us, after all the pain they have experienced and has characterized their childhood, but Ms Ashenden made a good story for them.
Intense and very passionate their relationship, is narrated and described with great skill by the author.
The only thing that I forget about them is that the two protagonists are very young, but in my head I imagined them a little older, because they lived through a lot of pain.

Love Comes Home by Andrew Grey

When architect Gregory Hampton’s son, Davey, starts having trouble in Little League, Greg takes him to an eye doctor. The diagnosis hits them hard. Davey’s sight is degenerating rapidly, and eventually he’ll go blind.
Tom Spangler is used to getting what he wants. When Greg captures his attention, he asks Greg for a date. They have a good time until Greg gets a call from the friends watching his son, telling him Davey has fallen. Greg and Tom return to find the worst has happened—Davey can no longer see.
With so much going on in his life, Greg doubts he’ll see Tom again. But Tom has researched beep baseball, where balls and bases make sounds to enable the visually impaired to participate in Little League. Tom spearheads an effort to form a team so Davey can continue to play the game he loves. But when Greg’s ex-wife shows up with her doctor boyfriend, offering a possible cure through a radical procedure, Greg must decide how far he’ll go to give Davey a chance at getting his sight back.

Love Comes Home is the third book in the Senses series by Andrew Grey.
All books can be read as one-shots, each story has different special protagonists and as specials are the story of their romance.
As the title says, Senses, the leitmotif of these M/M romance novels are characters who in one way or another have a disability related to each of the organs of sense.
Actually in this third book is the son of one of the main characters to lose his sight, but this misfortune has a series of repercussions on Greg's life, who actually make no significant between the two who has become blind.
Greg has a deep bond with his ten-year-old son, he fought and obtained his custody after the divorce from his wife, he does not hide his homosexuality to his son and they have an amazing bond, but the impact of what happened to Davey is devastating for them.
Tom meets them because of a party of mutual friends and he remains impressed by the deep love he can see through from the pain that Greg feels for his son knowing what is going to  experience in the future.
In his past Tom didn't have a father figure present and he really struggled for that. He is attracted to Greg both physically and as a person and Greg's paternity  and his problems doesn't scare me.
Tom is a man with a deep sensitivity and he is able to empathise with Davey. From the outside he has a more objective view, he can understand the problems  between Greg and Davey and carefully manages to fit into their lives and to help both of them.
A moving story, very beautiful. A book in which Tom feelings, Greg and Davey are the real stars, the attraction and passion between the two men is there, palpable, but both agree to let it overshadow and so it starts their relationship in a deeper and more important way for them.
I think it might be a good story for anyone curious to read a M/M novel  without fear of feeling embarrassed to find too explicit sexual content.
I arrived halfway through the book without realizing it, because it was smooth and nice story in which I was immersed. I could call it "The world I'd love to live in" this described by Andrew Grey, a reality in which a gay parent gets the sole custody of his son, where a homosexual couple can kiss and hold their hands in the sunlight and a ten-year-old son is happy because the father finds a new mate.
Yes, it would be a beautiful world.

The Billion Dollar Bad Boy by Jackie Ashenden

Very very nice to read, the story won't be perhaps very original in its plot, but the two characters Donovan and Victoria deserve to be discovered, in the true sense of the word, since they love to hide their feelings well.
I read it in a short time because things between the two evolve very fast and I was curious to see what would happen.

"What happens in the limo, stays in the limo."

And this says a lot about how much about how the things can become hot when the two of them are alone.
It all begins when the two meet in order to make an agreement on the sale of the land in the possession of Donovan Morrow's family. The  agreement is impossible since the company's front man Morrow, the charming playboy, think about this land as a well-deserved compensates for all the dirty work he has done over the years for his father. Yes, because Donovan has always felt like an outsider, he feels underappreciate by his father,  his elder brother Jax is always better than him, but Donovan has the ability to seduce women, steal useful business confidences from both men and women;puoi father pushed his son to act in this way.

Victoria De Winter needs to conclude this transaction, she thinks this can be the only way to get the approval of her adoptive father, that in fact he never considered her like his daughter, but only as a courtesy to his wife.
The two are accustomed to wearing their "masks" like a second skin, Donovan, a wealthy businessman who leaves broken hearts and Victoria the Ice Queen, stolid at work and in private life.
He wants to enjoy playing like cat and mouse, provoke, putting her in a uncomfortable zone and stop the women's insistence for the conclusion of the transaction, but Victoria always amazes him ,  she is not liable to his provocations ever, she doesn't react as she is expected to do and between the two of them are real fireworks.

The story is engaging, well written and full of sensuality, passion, and more.
I liked Donovan and Victoria for the way they always play barefaced between them.
This is the second book in The Billionaire's Club, it can be read as an independent book; the first one is about Donovan's bigger brother, Jax.

Pretender to the Throne by Maisey Yates

Due the title so common I did not expect a book so good, maybe the best one I've read by Maisey Yates; I was expecting a nice romance, light and exciting, because she writes very well and her books are always pleasant reading, but this story is so much more.

A duty to the past...
After fifteen years in self-imposed exile, the haunted rebel prince Xander Drakos must walk back through the palace gates and assume the role he once abandoned.
Only one woman can restore his good name—the woman he left behind. But when Xander finds Layna Xenakos, he’s horrified to see the effects of the turmoil he left behind written in the scars across her body.
But her scars have given her strength, and Layna refuses to bow to his royal command. Now Xander must use his practiced charm to convince her to become his bride, securing his legitimate place on the throne.

Don't be fooled even by the plot.
The two protagonists of this book, Xander and Layna, are two wonderful characters as well as their story.
Xander after a tragic accident, in which his mother dies, escapes from everything and everyone, to try to forget the pain he feels. A beautiful young man, so lost, an heir to the throne, attempting to drown the memories of what happened with a life lived on the edge, always challenging his luck with abuse of alcohol, drugs, and spending his nights playing gambling and trying to forget the loneliness using sex, a lot of it, with beautiful women, and one night-stand.
After fifteen years he is still at the starting point and he must face what he left behind, so that the weight of his inheritance doesn't fall on the lives of his brother and sister, destroying what they have built up over the years.
Layna has faced an immense physical pain, but also her soul was devastated by what happened. Disfigured by the acid that someone launched against her, the beautiful and naive girl leaves the place to a woman who struggles to survive and avoid any kind of emotion that might undermine her precarious balance. She found her way in the novitiate, but this is just a shelter that allows her gradually to recover and face the challenge that Xander throws to her.

There are times of deep sorrow and sadness in this story, for both the protagonists.
Xander with his secrets hides scars perhaps heavier than physical ones of Layna, if it's possible.
What I loved in him is his attitude of constant challenge against Layna, he pulls oushaker from the shell, he goes beyond her appearance and manages to see her beauty, he treats her as a real woman, he feels a real passion for her and he try to protect her from people's wickedness.
Layna for her part has many fears, she constantly has to face evil and humiliation from everybody, but she endures everything, she wants to live, finally,  the ice that has kept her for years in a suspended state melts, and she returns to feel. She wants to try to feel emotions, although this could destroy her.
An amazing story, really.
It is the final book of the trilogy Call of Duty, but you can also read alone and enjoy this beautiful love story.

Anteprima: Forged in the Desert Heat by Maisey Yates

New book by Maisey Yates set in the desert, dunes, oasis, palaces from the thousand and one nights with fabulous gardens, where the protagonists are her fascinating sheikhs.

The Gypsy Sheikh, betrayer, modern-day marauder;Zafar Nejem has been called many things. And now he is to be called Your Majesty. Returning to the throne of Al Sabah, his first act is to rescue American heiress Analise Christensen from her desert kidnappers.
Since Ana is engaged to the ruler of the neighboring kingdom, her discovery must be concealed until Zafar can explain her presence, or else he risks war. But as the sun rises over the sand dunes, so does the forbidden heat that burns between them, threatening everything.

The male characters of Ms Yates books are always very intense, stormy and passionate. Zafar carries the weight on his shoulders for a mistake in his youth for love and now, after an exile in the desert, which lasted years, he wants to prove that he has the ability to restore justice in the Kingdom that was intended for him, although he knows himself and he is not diplomatic enough to succeed in this aim, he needs the help of Ana to appear a little bit more civilized. People are waiting for his mistakes.

Ana is perfect for this task, she has grown to be perfecistori everything, she is engaged with a Sheikh and she knows the environment surrounding Zafar, the pitfalls of politics.
The book tells a good story full of passion, but it collides with the need of them to do the right thing not for themselves, but for people to whom their duties.
In my opinion, maybe, Zafar surrender a little too quickly to Ana, his remorse about the past eas a big issue, I would have expected a little more resistance on his part.
