Anteprima: The Soldier's Dark Secret by Marguerite Kaye

The truth behind the hero

Officer Jack Trestain may have been one of Wellington's most valued code-breakers, but since Waterloo, he's hung up his uniform. If only he could just as easily put aside the tortured memories he carries deep within… Perhaps enchanting French artist Celeste Marmion might be the distraction he so desperately craves?

Except Celeste harbors secrets of her own, and questions that she needs Jack's help to solve! With Celeste's every touch an exquisite temptation, how close can Jack get without revealing his darkest secret of all?

The Soldier's Dark Secret is a really nice book, perhaps the best of those I've read of Marguerite Kaye or maybe one with the characters that impressed me the most.
Two excellent characters and an intriguing plot, full of mistery about Celeste's mother past, keeping the reader engaged in the storyline. I have to say that I love a lot too as Ms Kaye reconstructs historical scenarios in which puts her love stories, analyzing with a critical eye, creating characters that are war heroes, but they pay the price of their choices, sometimes horrible choices, of whom they were witnesses or architects during the war, and they were profoundly changed by them. I find this thing always makes them look very realistic.
I loved Jack e Celeste from the very beginning, their being so direct with one another and out of the schemes for that time.
Celeste is an artist, an independent and intelligent young woman, her childhood is marked by a cold and distant relationship with her mother, for which she will suffer a great deal, but at the same time she will not indulge in self-pity, learning to go forward on her way, she's so brave. She is not impressed by Jack, from his mood swings or his outbursts sometimes very sharp and she doesn't hide the deep emotions that he manages to unleash inside of her. Maybe being a painter and French helps her to dare more, without having to necessarily worry about being judged according to the rules of English high society families.
Jack, as mentioned before, is a man tormented by his inner demons, he fights a battle against himself, to overcome this terrible moment that seems to put a strain on his right mind. I really liked how he attempts to come to terms with his problems and at the same time being so perceptive and considerate towards Celeste.
Their relationship is full of passion, they don't understand the reason for the intensity of this attraction, but  they both don't hide their reactions and thanks to this sincerity they can go beyond the façade which  they reserve to the rest of the world.
Their story is undoubtedly made more charming by the mysteries surrounding the life of the mother of Celeste and the terrible secret that Jack try to hide from everyone, bringing the weight of it on his shoulder.
I think the book is amazing , beautiful love scenes and dialogues, well written love scenes, passionate and never vulgar. In short, I liked it a lot!
Thank to Netgalley and Harlequin for the kind preview.

Duke of Thorns by Sara Ramsey

A devil who won't be denied...

Too powerful to care for such petty things as morals, the Duke of Thorington lives as he pleases. And it pleases him to be known as a cruel, heartless blackguard -- one no sane woman would dare to marry. But when his fortunes suddenly crumble, he must find a way to save his family from ruin. To succeed, Thorington must secure an heiress for his younger brother. There's only one problem...

A lady who can't be contained...
Bold, daring Callista Briarley has survived riots, plagues, and revolutions while building her own privateering enterprise, but the sharks of English society are an entirely new challenge. It will all be worth it if she wins Maidenstone Abbey—a house her ancestors spent centuries killing each other for. To succeed, Callie needs a powerful ally. There's only one problem...
Two hearts destined to ignite...
During the most infamous house party of the summer, Callie and Thorington have one chance to secure both their futures. But Callie's need for freedom is directly at odds with Thorington's brand of control. When her past puts them both in danger, will their unexpected love be enough to conquer all?

Amazing book! And I sincerely believe Sara Ramsey is one of the best among the regency romances authors.
Her stories are never trivial, her heroines unpredictable and unusual for the time, strong, smart and funny and her male protagonists are absolutely magnificent.
Every time I fall in love with her stories and every time I find myself thinking about how much this author's books are beautiful and about her talent.
Callista is accustomed to live an adventurous life, following in the footsteps of his father, who abandoned the English high society, to travel and build his own merchant fleet. Lost both parents she didn't hesitate to take over the reins of the business, daring even the unthinkable for a British woman: to be in charge of American privateering ships,  attacking and capturing English ships and their precious loads.
She discover a new challenge, which will take place in an environment totally unknown to her, she could inherit Maidenstone Abbey, the home of her ancestors, the people so hated by his father, but that is something that she has never had in her life: a House, a place only for her, which  can become her refuge.
Actually she could win it in a weird contest  against her cousins: who of the three will choose a husband in the party considered the more interesting by judge Lord Ferguson, will have the home.
Callista wants to win at all costs, but it is also necessary to find the ideal candidate, one man facade, so she can manage her affairs.
A protagonist conventional and truly beautiful, but the Duke do Thorington is her worthy counterpart.
Full of charm and capable to use at best the importance and the awe that his title can arouse in people. He is on the brink of ruin, but before his creditors make everything public, Thorington wants to put his brothers and sisters in the best conditions, and what better occasion to find a rich heiress to one of them? The show he manages to put in motion and how he can dominate the scene is truly spectacular to read, but the unexpected meeting with Callista detract from the safety devices and the projects of this man so self-confident.
Together the two make fireworks, their exchanges of ideas are full of irony and sarcasm and the attraction that arises between them inevitable.
I loved both and reading their story has flown the pages, a story full of passion but also very romantic.
Callista sometimes manages to bring out the man hidden behind the facade of the Duke's ice, and he is so wonderful tender, a sweet man, passionate and protective. A man who is not afraid to give the right space to his woman, but at the same time he can become absolutely dominant if he thinks she can be in danger.
Duke of Thorns is the first book in the new series by Sara Ramsey Heiress Games and I can't wait to read the next book on Octavia, Callie's cousin, and Rafe, brother of Duke.

Bellissimo libro!

Risen- The Dark Victorian #1 by Elisabeth Watasin

It is 1880 in a mechanical and supernatural London. Agents of Prince Albert’s Secret Commission, their criminal pasts wiped from their memories, are resurrected to fight the eldritch evils that threaten England. Amidst this turmoil, Jim Dastard and his new partner Artifice must stop a re-animationist raising murderous dead children. As Art and Jim pursue their quarry, Art discovers clues about her past self, and through meeting various intriguing women—a journalist, a medium, a prostitute, and a mysterious woman in black—where her heart lies. Yet the question remains: What sort of criminal was she? A new beginning, a new identity, and new dangers await Art as she fights for the Secret Commission and for her second life.

Risen is a book that belongs to the steampunk genre, which I love very much for its settings. Very original and unusual, thanks to the style used by the author to write her story, but also for the protagonists Art and Jim.
Art and Jim are two agents in the service of a Secret Commission, this organization has the task of selecting person raised after their death, to turn them into agents to fight evil creatures.
The past of these agents is erased from their minds and their only new aim is to complete the missions that are assigned to them.
A story full of action, mystery, but also with fun moments thanks to the profound differences between Jim and Art.
Art is a ghost with the great potential, but she is still pretty inexperienced. During the story she meets mysterious women who seem to have been part of her past, but in this first book, yet some questions remain outstanding on her.
The lesbian theme is hardly mentioned, even if Art realizes to be lesbian, in the book is made only a brief reference to this thing and everything focuses on the resolution of the case entrusted to Art and Jim: find the man who is the re-animator of the murdered children, whicthey are attacking the residents of London.
I'm very curious to go on reading this series in the future.
Thanks to Netgalley for the book.

SERIES: The Dark Victorian #1

Never Seduce a Sheikh by Jackie Ashenden

KHow deep into the darkness will she have to go to help bring him into the light?
Oil baronness Lily Harkness isn't so much steel magnolia as titanium cactus. She's used to living in a man's world and when she plays, she plays to win. She wants exclusive oil rights to ensure her company remains at the top and she's not walking away empty handed.
Sheikh Isma'il al Zahara rules his country his way. Always in command, he has his own plans for his country's oil and it's not just about the money. But he's intrigued by the buttoned up business woman who's come to his country to strike a deal. He can't help but wonder what's beneath her icy facade.
Lily's desires are buried down deep, but her attraction to Isma'il is too strong to deny. Will seducing the sheikh cost Lily her body and her soul?

Cute, nice texture and two excellent protagonists.
At the beginning of the book I loved shamelessly Isma'il and I had a little underestimated Lily, which eventually turns out to be a really tough and combative woman, I liked her a lot.
Isma'il is very charming and alluring as often are these sheikhs in their books, but at some point goes into crisis with himself, he's haunted and Lily has to fight alone for their story.
In this I was disappointed a little bit with him, but still remains a good story.
Thank to Netgalley and Tule Publishing  for the book.

An Uncommon Whore by Belinda McBride

"As a general rule, you won't find the love of your life while you're on your knees under a table." -- Helios Dayspring

Pasha is a slave, whoring for travelers at the most dangerous bar on Warlan. He has no memory, no future of his own, yet deep inside Pasha knows that that he is meant for better things. The day that Pasha spots the dangerous pirate in the bar, he knows that he mustn't let the stranger slip away, regardless of what he must do to attract his attention.

Captain Griffin Hawke spent the greater part of a decade searching for his lost king, only to find Helios Dayspring crouched between his knees, swathed in the robes and shackles of a whore. Though he is appalled by the downfall of his king, the hardened officer finds himself falling for the allure of the sensual creature who has taken his place. Returning Helios to his position on the throne is the only right thing to do, yet Griffin knows that in doing so, he risks losing his lover forever.

"A whore is a whore is a whore, unless he's something else completely. I guess I must be an uncommon whore." -- Helios Dayspring

Amazing!
The stories written by Belinda McBride are truly unique, full of such magic in their narration, sometimes I think that momentslifehacker characters' life could be full of sadness and pain, but Ms McBride can speaks about them lightly, while still managing to hit right in the reader.
An Uncommon Whore is an LGTB erotic sci-fi novel, which also tells a wonderful story of love between two men who meet after many years and after both of them lived terrible experiences that have changed them; the only thing that maybe could be positive after everything is that their changes will help them to love each other in a different way, more complete, which maybe in their past pride, inexperience and social constraints had not permitted.
Pasha is a slave with no memory of his past, to his master's wishes he's a sex slave and must prostitute himself, but despite his degrading reality, repeated washing of brains and the chip that was implanted in order to force him to obey his master, he still keep of thinking that his life has another purpose, something important and that escapes him. Pasha is actually King Helios, disappeared from his home planet after a terrible war at the hands of his enemies. A King whose research from his faithful have never ceased.
Captain Griffin, for years, lived undercover and he is the leader of his research and when he finds Helios he can't believe it. The appearance of Helios/Pasha is undoubtedly more alluring than ever, his memory is erased, but his heart recognizes Griffin, he knows in his heart that Griffin is his salvation.
Theirs is a beautiful love story: full of strong feelings and physical attraction, beautifully narrated by the author, tenderness and eroticism, passion, trust and deep friendship, complicity and love.
Everything is told so disenchanted and sometimes slightly ironic from the viewpoint of Helios, how he faces his slave's life, how he lives his discovery to be a King, without memory of his planet or about  the terrible battles that he faced to save his people, and a love for the man who has been the most important person in his life, but with whom there has always been some boundary that brought them to the contrast.
I loved Griffin's character too, proud and protective and lethal. He truly loves Helios, but he's afraid that the feelings of his former mistress aren't real, that Helios can be affected by his loss of memory, and he doesn't want to take advantage of the situation.
Really beatiful and I can't wait to read the next book about them.
Thanks to Netgalley and Loose Id for the book.

TITLE: An Uncommon Whore
AUTHOR: Belinda McBride
SERIES: Un Uncommon Whore #1
PUBLISHER: Loose Id

Bellissimo!

Hot Secrets by Lisa Renee Jones

The Walker Brothers... Tall, dark, and deadly, these three brothers run Walker security. Each brother is unique in his methods and skills, but all share key similarities. They are passionate about those they love, relentless when fighting for a cause they believe in, and all believe that no case is too hard, no danger too dark. Dedication is what they deliver, results are their reward.

HOT SECRETS: (Book 1) Royce Walker, a former FBI Agent, who's opened a private security firm with his brothers, has always had the hots for the prim, proper Assistant District Attorney, but considered her hand's off because of a family connection. However, when danger threatens Lauren, he isn't willing to stand by and watch her get hurt. Now the passion for survival is only rivaled by the passion burning between them. And that passion, might just be the death of them both.

Let's talk about these Walker brothers. Certainly they deserve it after reading Hot Secrets, the first book in Tall Dark & Deadly  series by Lisa Renee Jones.
The book is quite nice to read, a contemporary romance, whose plot also intertwine elements of suspense and mistery.
Lauren is a lawyer, she puts passion and sense of Justice working for her profession as district attorney, despite having a very influential father that would love to have her by his side in his law firm. Lauren's cases are complex and often attract the attention of mass-media about murders and death penalty. But there are not just newspapers and television interested in the woman, she receives strange phone calls for some time, and alarming invasions of her privacy and home that turn into veiled threats.
Royce Walker has always been attracted to the woman, but working together with his brothers of an agency that deals with security, in this case his interest is not just personal.
There aren't men with exceptional powers or supernatural creatures, but the  Walker brothers Walker are no less dangerous and lethal if you cross their paths. They're charming, hot and dominant.
Hot Secrets is really well written, I read it in a very short time and Lauren and Royce are two good characters, and the chemistry between them exceptional.
Thanks for the book Netgalley.

RATING: 3.5 stars
