The Lady and the Laird è un regency romance molto carino e ben scritto, e posso solo sperare che sia lo splendido inizio di una serie altrettanto interessante: Scottish Brides.
La trama mi aveva fatto pensare a una storia, forse, un po' più superficiale, ma sono stata contentissima di aver scoperto invece due splendidi personaggi, protagonisti di un bel racconto, romantico e passionale al punto giusto.
Lady Lucy MacMorlan ha giurato e spergiurato che uomini e matrimonio non fanno per lei, ma questo non le impedisce di trovare un accordo con il fratello per scrivere lettere d'amore per lui e i suoi amici, dietro compenso - lettere che diventano sempre più piccanti nei loro contenuti, facendo crescere la sua fama. Questo fino a quando, inavvertitamente con le sue lettere, Lady Lucy diventa la causa della rottura del fidanzamento di un noto nobile, Robert, il marchese di Methven.
Un passato pieno di conflitti e spargimenti di sangue ha lasciato tra le famiglie Methven e MacMorlan una certa acredine e Robert è furioso che le lettere di Lady Lucy gli siano costate le nozze con la sposa con la quale aveva urgentemente bisogno di sposarsi, per mettere fine a una antica disputa riguardo alle terre del suo clan. Decide di fare una proposta sorprendente a Lucy: in cambio del suo silenzio, la donna deve sposarlo e garantirgli l'erede del quale ha bisogno. Un inconveniente matrimonio di convenienza, ma lo scontroso marchese e la bella giovane intellettuale riusciranno a combattere contro il potere dell'amore?
Lady Lucy viene descritta come la donna perfetta per ogni circostanza: la figlia e la sorella perfetta, sarebbe la perfetta fidanzata e naturalmente la moglie perfetta, se non avesse rifiutato le offerte di vari pretendenti. Ma come si dice "le acque scavano in profondità." In realtà Lucy è una giovane donna che vuole approfondire le sue conoscenze a 360° e non solo; grazie alla Blue Stocking Society, un circolo culturale più o meno segreto, in cui alcune donne di nobili origini dell'epoca approfondivano le loro conoscenze in campi non ritenuti sempre appropriati per loro (dall'arte, alla medicina, la fisica, tecniche di difesa personale, ecc...). Lucy è una giovane donna intelligente, testarda, ma anche leale e appassionata, e un forte trauma nel suo passato ha influenzato profondamente i suoi comportamenti e le sue decisioni.
Robert Methven è un personaggio maschile stupendo, mi è piaciuto in ogni suo aspetto: la lealtà verso il suo clan, la sua capacità di affrontare i problemi, andando anche contro le regole, la sua volontà e soprattutto il suo comportamento nei confronti di Lucy, comprensivo, che la aiuta a superare i suoi timori, e la sua capacità di apprezzare una donna così singolare nelle sue aspirazioni.
Spero che ben presto venga pubblicato il secondo libro di questa serie, qualcosa mi dice che i protagonisti saranno due personaggi che in questo libro guarda caso non possono tollerarsi a vicenda: la sorella vedova di Lucy, Mairi e Jack, caro amico di Robert.

The Lady and the Laird is a regency romance very cute and well written, and I can only hope that is the beginning of a series equally interesting: Scottish Brides.
The plot had made me think of a story, perhaps, a bit more shallow, but I was very happy to have discovered two wonderful characters, protagonists of a beautiful story, romance and very passionate.
Lady Lucy MacMorlan may have forsworn men and marriage, but that doesn't mean she won't agree to profit from writing love letters for her brother's friends - letters that become increasingly racy as her fame grows. That is, until she deliberately ruins the betrothal of a notorious laird, Robert, Marquis of Methven.
Past centuries of bloodshed have left the Methven and MacMorlan families bitter enemies and Robert is furious that Lady Lucy's letters have cost him the bride he needs so urgently to save his ancestral clan lands. Now he makes Lucy a shocking proposal; in return for his silence she must become his wife and provide him with the heir he needs. It is an inconvenient marriage of convenience but can the rugged laird and the bluestocking beauty fight against the power of love?
Lady Lucy is described as the perfect woman for every circumstance: the perfect daughter and sister, would be the perfect girlfriend and of course the perfect wife, if she hadn't turned down offers from various suitors. Actually Lucy is a young woman who wants to deepen her knowledge at 360° and not only; thanks to the Blue Stocking Society, a cultural circle more or less secret, where some women of noble origins of that historical period generally deepen their knowledge in fields that are not deemed appropriate for them always (from art, medicine, physics, self-defence techniques, etc.). Lucy is a young woman intelligent, stubborn, but also loyal and passionate, and a strong trauma in her past has deeply influenced her behaviors and decisions with men.
Robert Methven is a male character, I liked in every aspect: loyalty to his clan, his ability to tackle the problems, even going against the rules, his will and his behaviour towards Lucy, which helps her overcome her fears, and his ability to appreciate a woman so singular in her aspirations and skills.
I hope to read soon the second book in this series, something tells me that the protagonists are two characters in this book happens cannot see each other: Lucy's sister, Mairi and Jack, dear friend of Robert.
