Behind the Courtesan by Bronwyn Stuart

Nice book historical romance, with a plot and characters that have  surprise my self and my expectations in this book. I thought it was like "Pretty Woman" story, set in England in the past and instead, I found a story more believable and nice, especially thanks to Sophia and Blake the two protagonists.

When courtesan Sophia Martin returns to the village she fled as a young woman, she knows it won't be a happy reunion--but she can't refuse her brother's request to attend his expectant wife. Trapped until the baby arrives, she must navigate the social rift she caused when she left to pursue a disreputable life--and keep the true reason for her departure from the man she once loved, the bastard son of the Duke who ruined her.
Blake Vale has never forgotten Sophia, but he can't accept the decisions she made, the courtesan's life she leads, or the fact she's cast aside her true self. Plain old Sophia has to be inside this hardened woman somewhere, and he's determined to make her see she doesn't need rich men to be happy, and that their future has nothing to do with the past.
When the dukedom suddenly falls within his reach, Blake must come to terms with his own past and his birthright, and what that means for his future...and Sophia.

Sophia's life is not easy, it is not a fairy tale, since from she was a young girl she had to face horrific situations because of crudelty of the man, who in theory, was supposed to protect her more than others, she fled away, escape it seem the only solution and she had to come to terms with a hard reality, thanks to which, however, she becomes a courageous and intelligent woman, she didn't cry about her misery, she fought adversity and thanks to friends who she discovers in time of real need and to her protectors she manages to live a dignified life. No false hopes or dreams for a future perfect, she is a realist. At the same time she accepted the fact that she is considered a paria  because of her lifestyle, but she is not willing to accept humiliations because of people's prejudice.
Blake for his part is not the perfect knight in shining armour, which welcomes her as the sheep back into the fold, even while he feels strong feelings for her, he continues to provoke her and he finds  difficult to forgive Sophia's choice, also because he does not know the real reason why she fled.
Slowly the nodes come to roost, and this gavette start to a nice story to read, thanks also to the other characters in the book, which surround the two protagonists.
