Lady Cassandra Eastham non può essere distratta dagli importanti affari di famiglia di cui si occupa, nemmeno dal ballo che viene organizzato a casa sua. In segreto per non far scoprire la malattia del padre, la giovane ha sostituito il padre, nel suo lavoro di traduttore di documenti altamente riservati indirizzati all'Agenzia Britannica da parte del Governo del Portogallo. Qui viene interrotta da Weston Barrington, Conte di Armadale, eroe della guerra combattuta in Portogallo in passato e appena rientrato in Inghilterra da uno dei suoi numerosi viaggi nello stesso Paese. Nonostante Lord Barrington appaia ansioso di ricominciare la sua vita all'interno dell'alta società, Cassandra prova un'immediata diffidenza nei suoi confronti e non ha nessuna attenzione di farsi abbindolare dai suoi occhi blu, o dallo splendido colore dei suoi capelli, tanto meno dai suoi tentativi di corteggiarla nella lingua nativa della madre di Cassandra, il portoghese. Il conte di Armadale - West per gli amici - riesce nel suo intento di prolungare la sua permanenza nella tenuta degli Eastham per scoprire se in questa casa è presente una spia, ma prova una profonda attrazione per Lady Cassandra, nonostante le sue decise intenzioni di rimanere un uomo libero da vincoli sentimentali. Quando una giovane donna fa il suo arrivo dagli Eastham brutalmente ferita e muore sul pavimento dell'ingresso della casa, l'incidente fa nascere una collaborazione tra West e Cassandra per scoprire la verità sui motivi dell'omicidio. La morte della donna non è un evento accidentale e il fatto che, nonostante gli umili vestiti, il suo aspetto sia uguale come una goccia d'acqua rispetto a Cassandra, non rende la cosa meno misteriosa. E la giovane potrebbe essere la prossima vittima dell'assassino. Cassandra e West lavorano insieme per scoprire l'identità della donna e sul perché si sia presentata a casa Eastham. West si rende conto che le sue motivazioni sono legate maggiormente ai sentimenti che comincia a provare per Cassandra, invece che al desiderio si svelare il mistero. L'unica cosa che vuole è proteggere la ragazza.
Bello, con una trama ben scritta e sviluppata creando suspance e interesse.
I personaggi di West e Cassandra sono entrambi ben caratterizzati e non convenzionali nei loro comportamenti, nel loro modo di pensare e come si pongono l'un l'altra.
La loro attrazione è profonda e non solo spinta da motivazioni legate all'attrazione fisica, ma soprattutto per il loro modo di essere e pensare.
West è un uomo che ha vissuto mille vite, viaggiato, combattuto guerre, non il solito ricco belloccio.
Cassandra è intelligente, scaltra e dotata di un grande spirito di avventura, oltre che di un'ironia pungente.
Veramente un bel libro da leggere.

I really liked this book and it seemed a bit of a James Bond regency version along with his bondgirl, intriguing, funny thanks to the exchanges of ideas between the two protagonists, a lot of action with a good mystery to solve.
Even her family's ball cannot distract Lady Cassandra Eastham from the very serious business of her life. Secretly, she has assumed her father's work of translating highly confidential documents for agencies of the British and Portuguese governments in order to hide her father's illness. When an important message arrives on the night of the ball, Cassandra, eager to read it, escapes to the seclusion of a dark corner. There she is interrupted by Weston Barrington, the Earl of Armadale and a hero in the Peninsula War, who has only recently returned to England from Portugal. Although Lord Barrington appears eager to resume the life of a privileged English gentleman, Cassandra instinctively distrusts him and refuses to be seduced by his blue eyes and fair hair, or romanced in her late mother's language-Portuguese. Lord Armadale-West to his friends-has managed to become a live-in guest of the Eastham family to determine if there is a spy among them, but West is drawn to Lady Cassandra despite his determination to remain a bachelor. When a brutally injured young woman arrives at Eastham House and dies in the marble foyer, the incident unites him and Cassandra in a dangerous partnership. The dead woman cannot be an accidental target for murder. Despite being dressed in rags, she looks enough like Lady Cassandra to be her twin sister. And Cassandra might be the murderer's next victim. As Cassandra and West work together to uncover the woman's identity and why she came to Eastham House, West comes to realize his responses to his beautiful partner have more to do with desire than detection and deceit, and he is determined to do battle to save the life of the lady with whom he is falling in love.
Good book, with a well-written plot and developed creating suspense and interest.
The characters of West and Cassandra are both well characterized and unconventional in their behavior, in their way of thinking and how they act to each other.
Their attraction is deep and not just driven by motivations related to physical attraction, but especially by their way of being and thinking.
West is a man who has lived a thousand lives, travelled, fought wars, not the usual rich and good looking bachelor.
Cassandra is smart, with a brilliant mind and a great spirit of adventure, as well as a sharp tongue.
A really nice book to read.
